If you are considering changing your diet to feel better, think of how you can support your liver at the same time. If your liver is clogged and not working well, you will not see the benefits of your changes as quickly as you could. Your liver works as hard as your heart and is responsible for several processes that directly affect your overall health and how well you feel, both physically and emotionally.
Though your liver is responsible for hundreds of vital processes, here are the top 5 in relation to feeling better fast;
- Produces bile to help digest food and absorb nutrients.
- Stores vitamins, sugar and iron to support your energy levels.
- Filters and removes waste products, drugs and other poisonous substances.
- Produces immune factors and filters out bacteria from the bloodstream to fight infections.
- Controls the production and removal of cholesterol.
If you are overweight and can’t lose it, feeling sluggish, or suffering from digestive distress you likely have a clogged or sluggish liver. Here is a list of signs that indicate that you need care for your liver:
- Excessive belly fat or a muffin top
- Trouble digesting fatty foods
- Acid reflux or heartburn
- Belly bloating
- Dark spots on the skin (liver spots)
- Acne or rosacea and or itchy skin
- Unexplained weight gain and unable to lose weight
- High cholesterol and triglycerides
- Mood swings and depression
- Sleep apnea or snoring
There are more, but these are the signs I see most often. And why does your liver gets clogged up? Well, we’re super busy and we take shortcuts with food, eating out and eating more pre-processed food to save time. These are filled with chemicals and substances your body can't use, and they have to go through the liver for processing. You are also bombarded by toxins daily from the air you breathe, the personal care products you use and the water you drink. All toxins are processed by the liver and flushed out of your body, unless it gets overwhelmed. Then many of these toxic substances are either stored in your fat or get stuck in the liver.
And you probably eat more sugar than your body can safely process. This is common and causes your liver to work harder to maintain blood sugar levels. Finally there's chronic stress, the big daddy of them all when it comes to disrupting your body’s innate ability to regulate itself. When you’re under a lot of chronic stress, your body diverts energy to survival mechanisms resulting in a bigger load for your liver to handle with less resources.
So if you’re going to start a new program to help you feel and look better, you can’t skip taking care of your liver. Here are a few steps you can take right away to get you started;
Reduce the toxic load; switch to organic, whole foods and natural cleaners & personal care products.
Reduce stress; practice stress relief techniques, check for parasites infections, avoid foods that you are allergic or sensitive to and focus on getting plenty of rest. If you’re taking medications, these too can stress your liver and digestive functions. Reduce them if possible, but check with your doctor first.
Support your liver; check enzyme levels, eat naturally fermented foods, drink lots of clean water, include healthy fats in your diet, lots of green leafy vegetables. Cilantro and parsley are great for this. To help reduce think bile from your liver, start the day with a glass of warm water with fresh squeezed lemon juice. And possibly add liver supporting supplements like B-complex, Vit. C, Vit. E, Milk Thistle, Dandelion or Globe Artichoke.
Taking care of your liver is critical to your overall health and increases your chances of making real change so you feel and function better. You don’t want to waste your efforts to make healthy changes by ignoring this important organ.
