Here Are Four Strategies That Don’t Work – Yet People Always Try Them Anyway:
Switching to Compounded Bioidenitical Hormones
If you’re anything like most of my clients, you’ve probably been told to switch to bioidenticals, because they are natural hormones making them more safe and effective.
You may use them and suffer no ill effects, but the truth is they are not better than FDA approved hormones just because they are natural. And you may be missing the point. They alone will not reduce your symptoms if the FDA approved hormones do not.
In fact, they could make you feel worse.
I advocate for going natural in as many areas of you can, and the term “bioidentical” does imply these hormones are natural or the same as the ones found in your body.
This can make you feel safe.
However, all therapeutic hormones, including bioidenticals, have to go through multiple steps of chemical processing. And, not all compounded forms are federally monitored for safety, quality or effectiveness.
Yes, they often work, your product might be more natural, and you may even feel better for while depending on if they switched up the formula. But they are not “better,” and will not improve your symptoms by taking them alone.
Additionally, because compounded hormones are produced on site the level of hormones may vary from batch to batch. That can result in your symptoms feeling more erratic.
Finally, the ingredients they are compounded with may not be safe – for you.
It’s really common for women who are suffering with mood swings and depression due to hormone imbalances to be prescribed antidepressants to counteract the emotional experience of being on HRT.
For some, antidepressants can ease symptoms and may be necessary.
However, taking antidepressants may give you a sense of false safety and make it possible for you to ignore the root cause. This can lead to worsening your condition down the road.
Additionally, it can be very difficult to convince your doctor you can come off them once you’re on them.
I haven’t had a client yet who wanted to come off antidepressants have their doctor not push back. Why is this a big deal?
For one, if you’re not clinical depressed, often the positive effects of antidepressants begin to wear off.
Now you’re throwing chemicals at your body that are disrupting your own chemistry, it’s not doing you any good, and you using up energy because your liver is trying to deal with the added chemicals you gave yourself.
Secondly, antidepressants block the absorption of serotonin by your cells.
This can help you feel better, but all of your major organs need serotonin to function – heart, liver, kidneys, and even your lungs. This puts you at a higher risk for strokes and heart attacks.
Trying Supplements Like Black Cohosh
Supplements are wonderful alternatives to prescriptions if taken correctly. But often people decide to take them based on “word of mouth” recommendations and in some instances that can be dangerous.
For instance, Black Cohosh is one that is commonly recommended online because it’s thought to reduce hot flashes, but if your liver is not in good health or you take too much or take it too long, it can cause liver damage.
In my practice, I do recommend supplement protocols. But they are very focused and target specific functions and are intended to be short-term only.
Supplements, like most prescriptions, should not be long-term solutions. Overtime they too can create more stress for your body.
And like prescriptions, it is a good idea to have a health professional monitor your use of them.
Supplements can have negative interactions, can have side-effects, or do little to nothing for you – creating expensive pee.
Consuming High-Amounts of Soy Or Flaxseed
You may have seen “natural menopause support” recommendations online that include eating more so-called healthy foods like Soy and Flaxseed.
But if you’ve tried it, you may have noticed that your symptoms didn’t really change. Maybe for few days, but that could be due to the placebo effect.
Soy and flaxseed contain phytoestrogens which are like estrogen found in a woman’s body.
And many believe that by taking these you can reduce hot flashes, but the risks may outweigh the benefits.
First, only one study has found that soy can reduce hot flashes, but none of the other symptoms. Though studies have shown flaxseed can help with menopause symptoms, even weight gain, you need a high dose. And there’s no evidence that you can extract enough estrogen from flaxseed to support diminished estrogen levels. This is particularly true if you have diminished gut health, which is often the case for women suffereing with raging hormones.
One of the reasons why I limit soy products is because soy is often used in commercial products and there is evidence that high doses of soy or flaxseed can increase your risk of estrogen-sensitive cancer such as breast, ovarian and uterine cancer.
Three Things You Can Start Doing Right Away To Turn The Tide In Your Favor…
Reset Your Nervous System
You know you should eat better and exercise to feel your best, but what’s also often missing is rest. This is more than sleeping well or taking time out to get a manicure. You want to build in routines, habits, that actively resets your nervous system throughout the day.
Your nervous system is either ON – in a state of stress, or it’s at REST.
When ON more often than at REST, you can exhaust your adrenals.
Hormone imbalances all have adrenal dysfunction in common. Whether you are producing too much cortisol or too little, it will disrupt your other hormones.
By resetting your nervous system, you allow your adrenals to “take a break” which will have a positive effect on your other hormones.
One of the best strategies you can build into your daily routine is to take breathing breaks.
When you can breathe calmly and deeply at an even pace for 2 minutes or more, you switch from stress mode to recover mode.
You can also give yourself a hand and ear massage. I keep a small tube of nice hand lotion around for this.
Start by kneading the base of the muscle under your thumbs and move out to your fingers.
Then massage your earlobes and work your way up and around the outer shell of your ear. Massaging both of these areas is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and have been proved to work scientifically.
Breathe calmly and deeply at an even pace for 2 minutes or more.

Don't Do INTENSE Exercise
Exercise has been shown to reduce stress hormones; adrenaline and cortisol, while increasing others.
For instance, getting your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes helps boost estrogen.
It also supports healthy levels of dopamine and serotonin, your “feel-good chemicals,” which can help you feel more energized, motivated and happy. That can reduce anxiety and depression.
Serotonin also supports sleep, appetite, digestion, memory and can even give your libido a boost.
But the problem is: many of the women I work with come to me and they’re doing something like running 4 miles every morning, which is actually making them feel worse, but they think they’re supposed to be doing it.
Intense exercise like out running your heart or high-intensity Crossfit trigger the release of adrenaline and cortisol – the two hormones you want to reduce.
When your adrenal glands are fatigued, they require more of the base hormone pregnenolone. Pregnenolone is also a base hormone for estrogen, testosterone and progesterone.
When your adrenals are fatigued, you’re not producing as much cortisol, and your body compensates by sending more pregnenolone over to the adrenals – reducing what’s available for the production of other hormones.
Additionally, when you’re in a state of stress, your body is not focusing on detoxification. You may be sweating, but that doesn’t mean you are expressing excess hormones and their byproducts.
While it is important to push yourself, pushing yourself too much or making exercise stressful can reduce the number of positive affects you get from exercise.
So, try to find exercise that gets you moving, but is also fun. Exercise that relieves stress – not increases it.
Here are 3 ideas you can try this week:
- Walk after lunch or hike during the weekend
- Take a dance class
- Join a Meetup group and go for a bike ride
If getting yourself to the gym after work is stressful and you can’t think of something else, sit down with a friend and start brainstorming new ideas.
The more you enjoy yourself, the better the returns and the calmer your hormones will be.

Hormones don’t work in isolation. They are part of a larger picture, and are affected by many things. If basic lifestyle changes such as eating well, getting plenty of rest and exercise, and prioritizing sleep are not enough to calm your hormonal symptoms – you want to look deeper.

There are 7 primary root causes I come across with my clients who are suffering from raging hormones. Some have one of these, some have several, and I’ve even worked with a few who had all 5 of them.
